Description Gold Aureus of Roman Emperor Titus, ICG AU-53. Titus. 79-81 A.D. One of the more popular of Roman emperors, Titus was well suited to rule. Brought up in court along with Claudius' son Britannicus, Titus was seated near him at the fatal dinner during which Britannicus was poisoned on orders of Nero. Indeed, Titus himself was poisoned at this dinner, having shared the cup with the emperor's son. Titus was taken ill as a result but recovered, unlike the unfortunate Britannicus, who died. The emperor Vespasian gave his son Titus command to prosecute the war in Judea in 66 A.D. when Titus was 27 years old. After bringing this campaign to a bloody conclusion with the sack of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., Titus was hailed as Imperator by his troops. He returned to Rome shortly thereafter, joining his father and taking control of the praetorian guards. Titus succeeded his father in a smooth transition in 79 A.D. His reign was marked by the completion of the Flavian Ampitheater (Colosseum), one of the more enduring of Roman architectural accomplishments and still today a symbol of Rome. He enjoyed cordial relations with the Senate (by not executing any of them) and was generally known as a benevolent emperor. The ancient historian Seutonius referred to him the "delight and darling of the human race"- his assessment is perhaps a bit overblown but it tells of the popularity Titus enjoyed during his tenure as emperor. Mint of Rome. ICG AU-53. RIC II, 177, struck 74 A.D.(as Caesar under Vespasian). A lustrous first century aureus with a strong portrait of the future emperor Titus. Struck on a nice large flan with a reverse type of Fortune standing left, holding a cornucopia. NO RESERVE!!!
